Earlier tonight, DJ Joyride (booking: 612-234-1143) was crowned Fargo-Moorhead Best DJ 2011 by the High Plains Reader (hpr1.com). This is the Rgird consecutive year that he received recognition by the people of Fargo (2009 best radio DJ - 2010 best performance DJ - 2011 Best DJ). Here are some words from Nick, who was unable to attend the big HPR Best Bets Celebration:

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry Design Zone by Spun Academy

Years ago Brandon, a good friend of the Icedbreaks Crew, did a presentation of Spun Academy's technological capabilities by demonstrating a tangible interface synthesizer. His goal was to get access to the Museum's Rocket Scientists to take things to the next level, but found himself on the other side of the table. Instead of Brandon asking the questions, these curators had so many that Brandon couldn't get to his.

He went over how the Spun Academy uses DJing, hip hop, electonica, etc. to get kids motivated to learn math, geometry, physics, and more. The curators immediately requested that Brandon and the Academy work with them to build exhibits to be featured at the museum. After countless emails, a visit to Spun Academy by the Institute design team, and a private conference...Design Zone was born. The project took years to complete and is now featured at OMSI's primary exhibit studio until May 30th, 2011.

Vincent Farvard and I met during Culture Shock and Secret Stereo Pt.4 last weekend in Grand Forks, ND. He is a very versatile DJ from France, also a student at NDSU. He stopped by our studio before his last final. Tuesday he is headed to France for the summer. Look for Vincent and I to do some shows in the fall of 2010.

As CDs fade away, there's a new vinyl answe

"They lied to us, man," he said.

Flipping through old vinyl albums at a used-record shop, I did what anyone does when a fellow human bares his soul: I ignored him. "They said CDs would sound better," he persisted. "They lied!" He rapped a vintage Ramsey Lewis album on the edge of the bin, like a gavel, releasing that distinct scent of dust and decomposing cardboard.

"I got rid of my record player. I let my records go. And they never even bothered to bring back half of my old jazz albums. Not half. It was like they hooked us, and then they gutted us."

It was a spontaneous outburst, but the gist of it I've been hearing for years among frequenters of the vinyl bins: despite the advantages of compact disks (CDs) over vinyl—you'll never hear a CD pop or click, and you can access any track instantly—the supposed perfection of the format was overstated. Of course, the companies were just as over-the-top about LPs. Here's a quote from my vinyl copy of Tony
[Bennett]'s Greatest Hits, Volume III: "You can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future." Pioneer audiophiles felt that way about Edison's cylinder phonograph of the late 1800s and the 78-rpm shellac disks of the early 20th century. And even as the "never obsolete" vinyl promise was being made in the 1960s, guys in lab coats were dreaming up cassette tapes and eight-track tape cartridges.

Then came the CD in the mid-1980s, and everyone knew that vinyl's days were numbered. But like those ancient tiny mammals that predated the dinosaurs—and then kept skittering around the feet of T. rex and his pals—vinyl never completely disappeared: throughout the '90s, hip-hop DJs spun vinyl disks, manipulating the turntables by hand for musical effect.

And it's not just a generational thing. Newer acts such as The Killers and Ryan Adams are finding an LP audience as well, offering vinyl and MP3-download versions of their latest releases as a single package. In fact, whereas Borders and Best Buy stores have been reducing their CD space, both retailers have installed new vinyl-LP racks.Now record companies are making money from vinyl again: vinyl-record sales soared 89 percent in 2008, while CDs, falling prey to Internet downloads, continued to trudge down the road to extinction. Music giant EMI has rereleased some 65 classic albums on vinyl, including acts ranging from Frank Sinatra to the Beastie Boys. U2's newest album (No Line on the Horizon), Bruce Springsteen's latest (Working on a Dream), and Harry Connick Jr.'s Your Songs have all done brisk vinyl business.

The Sound of Silence

It wasn't the sound that sold us on CDs—it was the absence of it. Your first CD experience was probably a lot like mine. I was working at a tabloid newspaper in Florida, and one day the publisher called me into his office. "Siddown," he barked. As always, I did as I was told. He just sat there staring at me, cigarette aloft in one hand. Then, suddenly, the crashing opening chords of Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Italien came barreling out at me from two large speakers. I leaped to my feet, as if to escape. My boss clapped his hands and laughed, sending ashes flying.

"It's the silence," he said gleefully. "A record warns you something's gonna happen with all the noise it makes. But this is a compact disk. When it's quiet, it's damn quiet."

Maybe too quiet. Even after CDs nudged vinyl out the record-store door in the late 1980s, enthusiasts stuck to their position that vinyl's sound reproduction was ultimately more satisfying than digital's. Warmer is the word used most frequently, and Jason Boyd, who oversees vinyl-record production and sales for music giant EMI, tried to explain it to me.

"The imperfections of the sound—the low ends—are sonically appealing," Boyd says. "CD is most pristine. But vinyl has the warm, full sound of the music. The cracks and the little imperfections that pop up seem to enhance the music. It's a way of experiencing music rather than just consuming it."

Boyd is probably right. But here's my theory: it's the unique imperfections of each vinyl record that make it irreplaceable. After enough plays, a record becomes a fingerprint of your listening experience. Just about everyone who owned the Beatles' White Album wore the thing down to a nub. Your copy, like mine, is a crackling mess through "Cry Baby Cry"—but then it becomes a mint-condition collector's item the moment that unlistenable jumble of sounds the Lads called "Revolution 9" fades in.

Indeed, all of our records carry an indelible personal stamp: the skip on your copy of The Dark Side of the Moon that results in Roger Waters's repeating "Money!" over and over…the holiday album you still play despite the damage it sustained in that unfortunate 1962 Christmas-tree pine-needle accident...the Shari Lewis record you kicked off the turntable while you were dancing, so now Lamb Chop repeats herself, like Rain Man.

Even the nonlistening rituals of record ownership are burned into the memories of everyone who ever had a collection. Need proof? Head down to a music store and buy a record—most larger shops now have at least a small vinyl section. The rest will come naturally: bring the record home (on the way, I guarantee, you'll admire the cover artwork). Now slip your thumbnail into the cellophane sheath, right at the album's business end, and slide it along. Feel that flutter in your stomach as the album opens? You're remembering what it's like to access your music with a single, graceful stroke—instead of peeling, stabbing, cutting, and finally biting your way into a CD jewel case. Now slide out the inner sleeve.

There she is: the proud, black thing of beauty, her label winking at you through the sleeve's center hole. As you extract the disk from the sleeve, you'll find you haven't forgotten how to hold it safely: your thumb at the ridge, the label resting on your fingers. If you're lucky enough to still have your turntable, you'll deftly center the record on the spindle. Best of all, the disk won't hop into a drawer and disappear into a box, like a CD. It will stay right there in plain view, singing to you at a steady 33 1/3 revolutions per minute.

See Me, Feel Me

Then there's the structure of a two-sided album. In the old days, records were programmed in two acts: Side One and Side Two. Someone who's never flipped an LP would be mightily puzzled over the lyric at the end of Side One on the Carpenters' fourth album, A Song for You: "We'll be right back /After we go to the bathroom." On my favorite album, Electric Light Orchestra's Eldorado, Jeff Lynne ends Side One on a chord progression that is left unresolved until Side Two.

Your Song

In my world, digital and vinyl have found a way to coexist: when I'm on the subway, or walking on a bustling city sidewalk, the slightly shrill digital music flowing through my earbuds seems appropriate. At home, however—where I'm bathed in the warmth of family and familiar surroundings—the sounds from my old record player seem to float from room to room, filling every corner with aural incense.

"Vinyl will never be mainstream again, but it's a growing niche," says Michael Fremer, senior contributing editor for Stereophile magazine. (He owns 15,000 vinyl records.) "When a former vinyl listener reconnects, he or she says, 'I remember that sound. That's what I'm missing!' And a new generation is discovering that vinyl sounds better and represents tunes sequenced as the artist wishes, rather than as a series of random events.

"I doubt kids will look back in 50 years and say, 'I remember when I downloaded that!' The forward-looking young people are going for vinyl editions of their important music."

The End

Those of us who fell for the Great Lie will never fully recover. My distraught friend from the used-record store is right: we'll spend the rest of our days trying to re-create our old collections, Ancient Mariners roaming the earth, our MP3 players slung about our necks like albatrosses.

But there will be the inevitable reunions with long-lost LP friends, the rush of anticipation when the needle hits that groove, and the exquisite moment when the music plays, warm and full, punctuated with the pops and crackles of passing time.

Reminder: DJ Hero Video Game Drops on Tuesday!

What surprises me is the scarcity of media coverage in the Fargo-Moorhead area about the next generation of rhythm-based gameplay. With the unbelievable skills developed by teens and tweens playing bass, drums, and guitar (albeit in a simplified form) is amazing. DJ Hero has the potential to create a legion of new DJs. DJ Joyride had the honor of releasing the preview of the DJ Hero video have in Minot back in early August.

"Watching these kids play the other successful Activision titles like Rock Band will blow your mind," said Joyride. "These gamers skip right past MEDIUM, and HARD modes to destroy their competition on EXPERT MODE. The amount of dexterity and coordination needed to play even a familiar song in EXPERT MODE is very impressive." The demo version of DJ Hero was very limited, with 3 "Mixes" to play and skill level max'ing out at HARD. "I'm still very excited for the game's full release in October."

DJ Joyride hosts a radio program on Fargo-Moorhead commercial-free radio station, KNDS 105.9FM. His program, The F-M Experiment, is the first show in a solid block of electronic music programming on the station every Friday night from 6 - 8pm.

With DJ Arson coming back to Fargo for one night only, it only made sense to make sure that Joel had a place to DJ while he is here. So, here you are... Icedbreaks is bringing not only DJ Arson, but arguably the best looking chick DJ in Minneapolis, Ajent Orange, to the official afterhours of the KNDS block party on May 3, 2008.

The sh!t hit the fan for Chyna Whyte promotions this week, calling it quits with Fl!rt Tuesday at Moorhead hot spot, The Broken Axe. The Broken Axe will continue to host ladies' night on Tuesday nights with DJ Aaron of Valley Energy Promotions mixing music videos on their 3 plasma screens.

DJ Godfather has been into many aspects of the dj and producer game
for 15 years now. He produced, recorded and mixed ALL the tracks in
his music player. Recently, he started a hip hop production team
called The Commission with partner D.L. Jones and Randy Lynch on the
lead and bass guitars. The Commission is currently finishing the
entire production of the album for their first artist Omega and has
already started with their second artist Da Paperboy. With their
Detroit meets Dirty South style of beats, you will definitely hear

DJ Godfather is one of the founding fathers of Detroit Ghetto tech
music. He has been a major player in the Detroit Ghetto tech/Electro

If you spend any amount of time exploring my website, Icedbreaks.com, then you surely know that our *totally awesome* audio search engine has been provided by SingingFish.com for the last 3 or 4 years.

I used singingfish every day to find popular music, sound effects and remixes. On Tuesday, the AOL buyout was complete and the site became forwarded to video.aol.com. I hate AOL. You should, too. I'm looking for an alternative audio/video aggregator slash search engine comparable to SingingFish.

Screwface

London based Chris and Nicky are better known as nu skool production
duo Screwface. Signed to Hardcore beats since 2005, this pair are fast
gaining a reputation for delivering breakbeat anthems with their
releases. Screwface came storming onto the breakbeat scene in April
last year with their first release 'King of the bongo' which was
instantly snapped up by all the breakbeat A-listers, and still holds a
firm place in their boxes today, proving that Screwface productions
can hold the test of time, and setting a precedent for things to come.
Since then Screwface have been associated with some of the most highly
regarded acts in the scene, and have proved to have serious chemistry
with artists such as The Autobots, after having three singles
together, including anthems such as 'Apocalypse' and 'Burn' featuring
the legendary MC Navigator. Nicky Screwface has formed one third of
the all female trio Broadbeats who have caused a serious stir this
year with their first HB release 'Crossfire/Soul Jah'. They have also
developed a formidable force in pairing up to write with rising stars
Ctrl-Z. With tunes such as Kung Fu Funk and Stereo: Typical, they are
consistently pushing the envelope and challenging the way people
perceive the breakbeat sound. Screwface have also earned their stripes
by their own merits with releases such as 'Phat Bass/Monte' which went
on to be the biggest selling Hardcore Beats Release of 2005 and 'The
day the earth stood still' from the label's recent Hardwired album
(also mixed by Ctrl-Z and Screwface) which is receiving widespread
critical acclaim and support from some of the biggest players in
breakbeat. This support doesn't end here either, Screwface have had
their tracks commissioned by artists such as Freq Nasty for his 2006
Breakspoll cd, as well as gaining serious amounts of airtime on radio
including heavy rotation on BBC Radio1 from DJ's including Zane Lowe
and Annie Nightingale. Needless to say the pair gain full DJ support
from the breakbeat elite and even from DJ legends such as Fatboy Slim,
who closed his set to 30,000 people at global gathering 2006 with
'Burn'. Their success in production has also led Screwface to
headlining gigs all around the UK and Europe and also to the USA,
where they continually show they can seriously rock a party. The
future looks very bright for Screwface as they continue to rise
through the ranks with no sign of stopping.

CTRL-Z

Ctrl Z are a Nu Skool Breakz production duo hailing from London. Tom
Petais and Nicky D'Silva aka Dash and Inch met through the Community
Music Program in London. The pairing up of these two DJs by their
tutor was to be the start of something special and their first Ctrl Z
Production was unleashed. Snapped up by Dj Mutinys Funkatech
Recordings, Disko' and 'Pain made up the debut single that was to
cause a big splash in the Breaks Scene. Straight to number 1 in the
Mixmag Chart and straight into the boxes of the Breakbeat elite this
dancefloor bomb paved the way for the duo. Now with 20 releases and
remixes under their belts on respected labels such as 777, Hardcore
beats and Rat Records, it is no surprise that after only a year in
business, Ctrl Z had the honor of receiving two nominations for Best
Breakthrough Act and Best Breakthrough Producer at the 2005 Breakspoll
Awards. Dash & Inch are receiving praise and support from some of the
biggest players in the scene: Freq Nasty commissioned no less than
Three Ctrl-Z tracks for his latest compilation Cd, while the
Freestylers requested not only a Ctrl Z remix on their album, but a
collaboration with themselves too! The list also includes
collaborations with Breakbeat Stalwarts Tayo and the Autobots. Their
DJ sets have to be seen to be believed, headlining Events all over the
UK and Europe, Ctrl Z have crossed the Atlantic for two successful
tours of the States and will be spreading their unmistakable sound
even further over the next year. As well as regular gigs, Ctrl Z can
be heard smashing up the airwaves on the Double Award Winning station:
Pyrotechnic Radio.

Winter Carnival a success.

The winter carnival went off without any (major) hitches! The long run from 2pm until 12am -- with a 2 hour exclusively HOTT afterhours at the Aquarium with P.O.S. and Mac Lethal was fresh fresh fresh. Final numbers are in, and approximately 690 people made their way through on Saturday. Please support the groups that came out to reprazent.

I'll repost the program with links to most of the groups' websites.
